Optum AI Family Health Assistant

In 2024, RVO Health, in partnership with Optum, set out to rethink its direct-to-consumer strategy. I was leading the Creative and Product Design groups, as well as championing generative AI adoption organizationally. My User Research team was seeing signals that user behavior was shifting toward AI for health and healthcare questions.

I proposed piloting an AI-powered Family Health Manager to unify fragmented care into a single, persistent interface for families. I defined the product vision, secured funding and executive alignment across RVO and Optum, and built a cross-functional team spanning Product, Design, and Research, alongside development partner Slytrunk.

We moved from concept to working alpha in under six months, launching with twelve families. The iOS app integrated with Optum’s HSID authentication and connected to ~70% of EHR systems, delivering real patient data.

  • Moved from concept to working product in under six months, establishing a repeatable zero-to-one delivery model

  • Secured executive buy-in across RVO and Optum, positioning AI as a core pillar of the company’s DTC strategy

Ongoing conversations with our test families drove feature prioritization and UX improvements in very tight loops that accelerated progress.
